Magic The Gathering: The Eleventh Hour [SIDE MISSION]

#1

A game for 16 players.

Having crushed the Gods of Amonkhet and captured the soul of Liliana Vess on Dominaria, little now stood in Nicol Bolas’s way. When approached by the powerful demon planeswalker Ob Nixilis offering up his servitude in exchange for an opportunity to face and defeat the powerful group of planeswalkers known as “Gatewatch”, Bolas sensed an opportunity to finally seize the power of which he has always dreamt.

When Gideon and the other members of Gatewatch including the newly minted Teferi and loose allies Jaya Ballard and Karn returned to Ravnica without Liliana, Jace Beleren was none too surprised. While the members of Gatewatch that fought side by side with Liliana on Dominaria refused to believe she had betrayed them, her failure to appear in Ravnica had left them with little argument against Jace’s assertions. Nonetheless they had work to do, they had come here to finally end the life of history’s most ruthless villain and nothing would stand in their way. To their surprise Jace had found a new ally of his own in the form of the mercenary pirate Vraska.

Image

Having travelled the planes gathering fables from every corner of the multiverse, Tamiyo realised that history was reaching the Eleventh Hour. All signs pointed to Ravnica and it was time for Tamiyo to finally make clear her purpose. She knows far more than people think.

Image

Meanwhile something inexplicable had occurred on Tarkir. Sarkhan Vol has unwound history and returned the Spirit Dragon to the multiverse. What part, if any, will Ugin play in the Eleventh Hour?

Gameplay

Loyalty and abiltiies

Each player (except Niv-Mizzet) is a planeswalker and starts the game with three active abilities and a set number of loyalty counters. Some players also have latent abilities. Active abilities are activated by either adding or removing loyalty counters (or in rare cases choosing to do neither). Abilities activated by adding loyalty counters are generally weaker than those activated by subtracting them. If a player’s loyalty counters reach 0 they die.

Death and Exile

In Magic the Gathering, death is not permanent. Certain characters have the ability to resurrect the dead, either themselves or others. This ability is seen most often in magic users skilled in black mana but is also seen in green and white magic very occasionally.

The state of being exiled is often used to signify a more permanent death, a death out of the reach of necromancy. Occasionally exile is a temporary one phase occurrence (previously referred to as phasing, or blinking). Some magic users possess the ability to phase themselves in and out of existence by exile. Powerful magic users, such as Karn, Teferi, Nicol Bolas, and Ugin, can do this to other objects and beings seemingly at their whim.

In this game, roles will not be revealed unless or until the player has been permanently removed ie. exiled. Players removed by vote are dead, not exiled.

Colours and Types

Image

Characters are usually one or more colour with the exception of artifacts which lack colour however there are nonartifact colourless creatures, planeswalkers, lands and spells too. Colours determine the types of magic or abilities the user possesses and is generally a reflection of their nature (black = evil, white = good, red=destructive, green=nature based, blue=aquatic) though this is not absolute as there are many examples of white based villains and black based heroes. In magic, black is the colour of death magic, white is the colour of restorative and healing magic, green is the colour of nature based magic, blue is the control of control and order based magic and red is the colour of fire based destructive magic. Some abilities cannot work on certain colours, and some only work on certain colours. The majority however work on any colour.

Types act as another attribute. Type is not a major focus here however there are some abilities that function with type as a consideration.

In This Game

Phases are day and night. Abilities are activated at night and during the day a vote occurs. The player with the most votes at the end of the day is the lynch candidate and will be lynched unless the vote is interfered with in some way. Some abilities occur before others and some occur at the end of the phase.

Win Conditions and Factions

The Assembly are the civilian faction and the Triumvirate the Mafia faction. In this game exists one independent, the Spirit Dragon Ugin.

Each faction has separate and competing win conditions with the exception of Ugin. The Assembly must eliminate all members of the Triumvirate and the Triumvirate must reach a position in which they cannot lose the game. Ugin however need only to survive to win the game and may win with either faction.

Roles

The Assembly of Ravnica

Gideon Jura - Human Warrior Planeswalker

Battlefield commander of the Gatewatch and one of the most honourable beings in the multiverse, Gideon Jura is bound by his desire to restore order and balance to the multiverse and the likes of Nicol Bolas stand in his way. Gideon starts the game with 5 loyalty counters and is white.

+1 Target player loses one loyalty counter at the end of the phase.

-2 Target player loses all but one loyalty counter at the end of the phase.

-10 At the end of the phase exile target nondragon player.

Ajani Goldmane - Leonin Mage Planeswalker

The great Leonin Ajani is the healer of the party and one of the wisest and most thoughtful members of Gatewatch. Just don’t make him angry. Ajani starts with 5 loyalty counters and is white/green.

+1 Prevent all actions against target player until end of phase.

-1 Prevent all actions against you until end of phase.

-7 At the end of the phase set your loyalty to three. You then receive an emblem that says “You may use your other abilities without affecting your loyalty counters.”

Liliana Vess - Human Necromancer Planeswalker

Captured by Nicol to do his bidding, Liliana desires nothing more than to see her captor destroyed at the hands of Gatewatch. A master of necromancy and black magic, Liliana is arguably the most powerful member of the Gatewatch. Liliana starts the game with 5 loyalty counters and is black. *secrets*

+2 Target dead player is allowed to vote in the poll during the next day phase.

-1 At the end of the phase, return target dead player to the game for the following two phases. Reset their loyalty counters. They may vote and use their abilities.

-12 At this end of the phase return target dead player to the game permanently.

Teferi - Human Mage Planeswalker

One of the oldest and most powerful planeswalkers in existence and student of the legendary Urza, Teferi is the newest member of Gatewatch. A master of white and blue magic, Teferi is able to exert control over all but the strongest beings in the multiverse. Teferi starts the game with 4 loyalty counters and is white/blue.

+1 Until the end of the phase target player is unable to use any activated ability. Add one loyalty counter to target player at the end of the phase.

-1 Until the end of the phase target player is unable to use any activated ability. Remove one loyalty counter from target player at the end of the phase.

-8 Target nondragon player loses all abilities until the end of the game. This effect occurs at the beginning of the phase. This will not work on the factional Mafia kill.

Jace Beleren - Human Wizard Planeswalker

Jace is the master of mind magic. Able to control thought, dreams and inspiration, Jace is considered the administrator of Gatewatch. Jace starts the game with 4 loyalty counters and is blue.

+1 Until the end of the following phase you are able to communicate with target player outside of the game thread.

0 Add or remove one vote to target player’s vote count in the following phase. This does not work on dragons.

-4 Prevent all abilities during this phase.

Vraska - Gorgon Mercenary Planeswalker

Once controlled by Nicol Bolas, Vraska’s affection towards Jace Beleren warmed her cold heart and has inspired her to take up arms against the God-Emperor himself. A skilled assassin with mercenaries at her disposal, Vraska is a dangerous opponent and strong ally to the Assembly. Vraska starts the game with 3 loyalty counters and is black/green.

+3 Choose a player. If that player has less than 2 loyalty counters at the end of the phase destroy them.

-2 At the end of the phase remove 2 loyalty counters from target player.

-13 At the end of the phase remove all loyalty counters from up to three target players. If they would die, exile them instead.

Karn - Artifact Mage Planeswalker

Urza’s construct, the metallic Karn is an extremely powerful artificer. Unfortunately he is also a pacifist though when pushed hard enough he is capable of defending himself and those he loves from the forces of darkness. He tends to regret it afterwards though. Karn starts the game with 5 loyalty counters and is colourless.

If Karn is killed or exiled at night, the next phase will be a night phase.

+1 Target player’s actions this phase target a random player other than their intended target.

-2 Target player’s actions this phase target themselves. If this would destroy or exile the player, instead reduce their loyalty counters to one at the end of the phase.

-9 Exile target player. This does not work on humans.

Chandra Nalaar - Human Mage Planeswalker

The young pyromancer has found herself in the middle of one of the greatest moments in the history of multiverse. Limited only by her inexperience, Chandra is capable of wielding fire magic powerful enough to destroy planes. Chandra starts the game with 4 loyalty counters and is red.

+1 Target player loses one loyalty counter. This occurs at the start of the phase. This may prevent target player from using their ability. If target player's loyalty is reduced to 0, target player is unable to use their ability that night and stays on 1 loyalty.

-3 Target player loses three loyalty counters. This occurs at the start of the phase. This may prevent target player from using their ability. If target player's loyalty is reduced to 0, target player is unable to use their ability that night and starts the next phase on 1 loyalty.

-8 Target player loses 6 loyalty counters. This occurs at the start of the phase. This may prevent target player from using their ability. If target player's loyalty is reduced to 0 exile target player.

Jaya Ballard - Human Mage Planeswalker

Long thought dead, the pyromancer Jaya Ballard was discovered by Gatewatch and helped them to defeat the Cabal on Dominaria. She since decided to assist them in their efforts to overwhelm Bolas “because she didn’t have anything better to do”. Jaya starts the game with three loyalty counters and is red.

+2 At the end of the phase add an additional loyalty counter to target player.

-2 Choose a player. At the end of the phase you will discover if that player is a dragon as long as they are still in the game.

-10 All players except you lose two loyalty counters at the end of the phase.

Domri Rade - Human Scout Planeswalker

The gruul Domri was sought out by Tamiyo who perceived that he would have a significant part to play in the happenings on his homeworld of Ravnica. Domri is a member of the divided Gruul clans and the youngest planeswalker in the group. Domri starts the game with 3 loyalty counters and is red/green.

+1 Choose a player. You will see all players who target that player during the current phase.

-1 Choose a player. You will see all players that player targets during the current phase.

-7 You will see all player targets that occurred during the current phase.

Tamiyo - Soratami Mage Planeswalker

A truth-seeker and story teller, Tamiyo is reluctant to involve herself in matters unless they pose a great threat to the future of her people or the multiverse itself. It is because of this that she has interjected herself at the Eleventh Hour. Tamiyo starts the game with three loyalty counters and is white/green/blue.

+2 Choose target dead player. You will learn that player's role and alignment. This effect occurs at the end of the phase (ie. they need to still be dead at the end of the phase).

-1 Choose a player. If their alignment is Mafia you will be told and the end of the phase. Otherwise nothing will occur.

-12 Reveal your role to the thread. You may reveal all information you have gathered. You will die at the end of the current phase. This ability can be activated at any time.

Niv-Mizzet - Elder Dragon Wizard

The smartest being on Ravnica, the dragon-wizard Niv-Mizzet while not a planeswalker might as well be. A 15,000 year old dragon capable of wielding red and blue magic Niv-Mizzet might be capable of besting Nicol himself in a game of chess. Niv-Mizzet is not a planeswalker and as such has no loyalty counters and is red/blue.

Each night you may choose a player. You may add or remove up to three loyalty counters from that player. If that player would die as a result of this action, instead they end the phase on 1 loyalty counter.

The Triumvirate

Nicol Bolas - Elder Dragon Wizard Planeswalker

The oldest and most powerful being in the multiverse, Nicol Bolas has terrorised the Multiverse for millenia. Having raised civilizations just to hunt them to their own extinction and destroyed some of the most storied beings in the history of the multiverse, Nicol is known by every living being in the multiverse as the angel of death.

Nicol’s current goal is to rid the world of every planeswalker aside from him and those bound in magical servitude to him. Nicol starts with 7 loyalty counters and is black/blue/red.

Nicol will be revealed to any investigations as a civilian.

+2 Choose two players. Any abilities used by these players during this phase will instead be used on one another.

0 At the beginning of the phase, exile target dead player.

-3 Reduce another player's loyalty to 1. This effect occurs after their action is taken that night.

-10 *secrets*

Ob Nixilis - Demon Mage Planeswalker

The former human warlord turned demon planeswalker Ob Nixilis craves nothing more than to destroy all which is good. Ob sought out Nicol Bolas to help him to achieve his ultimate goal, destruction of Gatewatch. Ob Nixilis starts the game with 5 loyalty counters and is black.

+1 Destroy target nondragon player. This ability may be used in addition to other abilities unless otherwise noted. When Ob Nixilis dies this ability will be inherited by Tezzeret and Nicol Bolas in that order.

-2 Exile target player. Use this ability instead of the factional night kill.

-11 As an additional cost to cast this spell reduce all other team member's loyalty counters to 1. Destroy four target players. Use this ability instead of the factional night kill.

Tezzeret - Human Artificer Planeswalker

Nicol’s most loyal henchman, the artificer Tezzeret is a powerful wielder of blue magic, specifically capable of manipulating objects into titanic constructions designed to destroy. Tezzeret starts the game with 5 loyalty counters and is blue/black. *secrets*

-9 *secrets*

Independent

Ugin - Elder Dragon Wizard Planeswalker

The twin of Nicol Bolas long thought dead, Ugin’s restoration at the hands of Sarkhan Vol may prove to be Nicol’s greatest threat or greatest victory. A being of magnificent power and splendour, this elder dragon is to order and light everything that Nicol is to chaos and darkness. He considers all but the most important matters of the multiverse beneath his gaze and refuses to participate in the games of the lesser. Ugin is colourless and starts the game with 5 loyalty counters. *secrets*

+1 Choose a player. Prevent all actions against that player for this night.

-3 Choose a player. For the rest of the game if they target you or vote for you it will fail. This effect occurs at the beginning of the phase.

True story:

I met a guy who introduced me to MtG (I knew of it, but never played), and he bought me a deck for my birthday. Nice guy. Only guy I ever played it with.

Well, I accidentally tripped and fell in his lap and he moved to another state like the next month.

I haven't played MtG since.

this looks super cool!! I've been adjacent to a lot of Magic players for the last several years/from college (including my boyfriend but he's not super into it anymore), and I have a passing familiarity with it, know a liiiittle bit of the lore/flavor and basically know how to play the game though I only tried playing a few times and never got the best handle on all the mechanics or much of the strategy since there are so many things lol. Anyway it looks cool how you're incorporating the mechanics into a mafia game!
