A walrus is a music-sharing event with a dash of competition. I describe the categories (cats) here, and you submit songs to me that you believe match those categories. I'll listen to those submissions (subs) and rate them. I will then run a live reveal for each cat on discord, where I will play every song submitted and everyone is invited to join in and listen.
How does this Walrus work?
You can submit songs to me via PM here, or you can DM me on Discord at marmot#0236. Please use youtube links if they are available and send do not spoil the links when you send them.
The deadline to submit songs is 11:59 PST on Tuesday, October 18th (although I can be a little flexible on this).
Reveals will be run at 3:00PM PST on Wed-Fri October 19-21.
Alts are welcome (sending in multiple sets of subs), but I maintain the right to revoke this option.
An unlimited number of people may participate.
Each sub will be rated on a score 1-10 for enjoyment and 1-10 for catfit. This is a mini walrus, so I will not be scoring at all based on familiarity. Pander as you will. Nothing is banned. (I enjoy most types of metal and rock, as well as some electronic, hip-hop and pop. Country and some rap are genres that will generally not do well, everything else I don't have trouble finding enjoyment in)
The Categories!
Monumental: It is the 10th anniversary, a monumental occasion in the Syndicate's history. Send me a song that is monumental, either for the genre or artist. This is open to interpretation.
Flash-Wagon: QUICK! nutella claimed Pyramid Song, and we need to kill someone else today!!! Send me a song that is fast-paced, short, or leaves little time to think. This cat will be scored live. To honor this theme, I won't listen to the subs until the reveal, and will score them as they flip.
Rezz: Rezz Please! Resurrection is the theme here. Send me a song either about coming back to life, second chances, or however you interpret this.
Anything else?
Nope, that's it!! Hope y'all have fun! I look forward to the subs!!
1) Monumental: It is the 10th anniversary, a monumental occasion in the Syndicate's history. Send me a song that is monumental, either for the genre or artist. This is open to interpretation.
I should like this song more than I do. The vocalist didn't do it for me. His softer singing early was fine, but ""shouting Icelandic dude"" didn't do it for me, albeit it suited the vibe of the song. Good piano. Good build. I saw this album is supposed to have hints of sludge-metal in it, but this song didn't have much of that. Still though, this appears to be both a step in a new direction for the band, and also their more popular album. Overall promising.
I like the slow build-up for this song. The kids choir is ok. Better than some I've heard, but I generally think they're not great additions to songs. Aside from that, this song fucking slaps.""I'm looking for!"" I'm not sure what the cat fit is though, I'd love an explanation for that one if you have it.
Oh hey that's the guy from One Direction. I'm not sure if this is monumtental. Is it? I sorta like his voice. The song is enjoyable. I really think the nailed the 80's synthpop vibe well. The synth player seems to want to play ""Take On Me"" but is holding back for some reason.
I don't love Velvet Undergound. But they're enjoyable enough and I have a ton of respect for them for taking rock, flipping it on it's head, putting it in a soup, cooking it, digesting it, pooping it out, and finding a record label willing to sell the end result, because it actually worked.
Metallica is one of the few bands around that have managed to release both a 5-star album (well, 2 of them) as well as a 0-star album. They definitely had some highs and some lows. While I don't think of this as the peek of their career, I do think it was the last shining moment before they finally started tanking. Some of their music is kinda well-suited for this format, and the end result is a pretty stellar live show.
Beautiful. This should've been subbed to Schia's music box cat. I don't know the catfit? But I also don't know Aphex Twin music well enough. In particular, I don't know many songs that lack beeps and boops quite like this one. But I'm glad there's no beeps and boops here. It's excellent as is. good interlude
There's some pretty good riffage in here. Wow. Great stuff. I looked them up and it turns out their guitarist is now the long time guitarist for Primus. No wonder this sounded promising. They released another album on Oct 12 I still need to go check out lmao.
Amazingly, this song wasn't even on the original album from '92. But it's on the 2015 re-issue. I'll just assume they wrote it around '92 as well, because this album was imo a big step for Swans going from an innovative band to an innovative band that played good music.
You know, this is both mildly cheesy and extremely ""fuuuck, that bass has grabbed my ass and started shaking it"". I'm not sure what's monumental about it, but the music video has boobs, and it falls into this ""Satanic Hard Rock"" realm that I'm not very familiar with, so it might be a new step there.
Sometimes she sounds Russian and sometimes she's clearly New Yawk. Thank you for this introduction to Regina that I've long since been missing. This is apparently a genre called Anti-Folk. Cool. Love the concept. Love the voice. I love the startling slides and notes she chooses to sing. Chaotic pop!!!
I fucking love this album. Yes it came out on like Oct 7, but I've listened to the full thing probably a dozen times at least. I've followed KGLW for the last couple years or so, and this is both one of their best works thus far, and an entirely new step for them into jazzier realms (while still retaining their kinda rough/garage-rock sound
I'm not familar with Sill, but she appears to be one of the pioneers of the chamber folk scene (as well as being a prominent singer/songwriter). Breathy delivery: good. Naturally clipped words: wow. Excellent stuff.
Hi. My name is Marmot and this is my first time listening to the Microphones. Yes I have listened to oddly juxtaposed instruments before. No I don't think it's ever sounded this beautiful. Yes I will probably listen to more. No I am not getting an angry elephant tattooed on my ass. Yes I am getting it tattooed on my left pec. Please ask me what I think of this whole album when I listen to it.
2) Flash-Wagon: QUICK! nutella claimed Pyramid Song, and we need to kill someone else today!!! Send me a song that is fast-paced, short, or leaves little time to think. This cat will be scored live. To honor this theme, I won't listen to the subs until the reveal, and will score them as they flip.
Lalala. Choir. Devin gets bombastic. Devin transcends to screaming. Weeyoo guitars. Evil boss, Z-TEAK, enters. CHAOSSSSPEEEDSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGA. Retribution. Devin marries Mac's mom, they move out to the country, have a couple kids, have a couple cattle. Mac's mom signs Devin up for a mafia game. She signs up too. Devin gets flash-wagoned Day 1. He screams at Mac's mom. He's still screaming. Devin is still screaming. Mac's mom turns 57. They get divorced. Their kids moved to Romania and Minnesota. One of them passed away in a tragic piano incident. Mac's mom is suffering from dementia, arthritis, and an pending liver failure. Devin is still screaming. Mac's mom asks Devin to stop screaming. Australia asks Devin to stop screaming. Devin remembers he can play other instruments and stops screaming and writes a 6 minute outro. He kills Z-TEAK. Mostly.
Not a catfit aside for length tbh, but this song sounds so dank on first listen. I wonder if I'll like it after repeated listens, but me now is bobbin'
