Day 0: Nineteen Would-Be Detectives
Image

“So, you all think you’re a bunch of private investigators, huh? All right, gumshoes. Take a look at this case and see if you can crack it.

A couple were robbed and murdered on Second Avenue. Our key eyewitness informed us that the murderer wore a plaid flat cap and had a lurching gait. He also told us that, after the shooting, the killer slurred, ‘That was for you, Phyllis.’ Finally, he said the killer was going to take the woman’s fur coat, but left it there after examining the collar. We asked about the gender of the killer, but our eyewitness said he couldn’t tell, even after hearing the voice.

“The first person we checked out was a younger man who worked in a cafeteria. He washed dishes, mostly. He said that had just started working there on a probationary status. He had a criminal history and had done some time. He said he was grateful to be working where he was. When he moved some dishes from one area to another, he seemed to walk normally. We asked if he knew any Phyllis. At first he said he didn’t, but after pressing him on the matter, he said there was a girl in grade school named Phyllis that he used to bully. Said she came from the rich part of town, and that her folks had lain off a bunch of their parents. His alibi was that he was at the movies. We asked him if the movie was any good. He said it was awful. Some two-bit Toon named Roger Rabbit was in it. Suspect #1 is Furman the Cafeteria Worker.

“The second man was a railroad porter. He, too, had no unusual stride when he came toward us, but he did ask to sit down while we interviewed him, even if it meant catching hell from the boss. He was wearing his uniform, so we asked him if he owned any other hats. His face brightened as though we had said the magic words. He told us he had a collection of hats back home, and even owned one that supposedly belonged to Ulysses S. Grant. We asked about a plaid flat cap, and at first, he told us he has several, and then all of a sudden asserted that he didn’t. He then corrected himself again to say that he had one, but that it was special to him and that he didn’t want it taken away. We asked where “back home” was, and he said in Virginia, which, of course, is across the country. He said he didn’t know any Phyllis. His alibi was that he was working on the night of the murder. This checked out, except that he got off right before the crime occurred. A tight squeeze, but still possible. Suspect #2 is Thurston the Porter.

“The third person of interest was a cobbler. Ironically, for a man of his profession, he was in a wheelchair. He could move his lower extremities, but only on a limited basis. We kept asking him to stand, but he swore at us and told us we were being cruel to an old man. That particular investigation was irritating to me personally, because he had a pair of dogs that kept jumping on us. When we asked him if he knew anyone named Phyllis, he said his mother and his sister were named Phyllis, and that they both died of consumption. His alibi was that he was fixing shoes. Alone. Figures. Suspect #3 is Wilbert the Cobbler.

“The fourth individual was a watchmaker. By God, he had the plaid flat cap on his head when we came in! And what’s more, he used a cane! However, he stuttered anytime he opened his mouth to talk. He couldn’t string two words together. We asked him about Phyllis, and he just shook his head. He made me nervous to be there. His alibi, once we could decode it, was that he was reading Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. We checked his place- he didn’t own a copy of that play. Suspect #4 is Templeton the Watchmaker.

“The fifth suspect was someone you all know, I bet. She was actually in the movie that came prior to the one Suspect #1 saw. Boy oh boy, it thrilled me to interview her! What a dame! Of course, she didn’t have a funny walk. I asked her about fur coats. She said they made her look fat. Fat! That string bean? But you know women. Anyway, I asked her about Phyllis. She admitted to knowing a Phyllis- two of them. One was a rival actress who married one of her casting directors, and that guy blackballed the suspect. The other was her niece, who was kidnapped six months ago, but luckily the kid’s all right. Finally, she implied she was sleeping with the prop guy. Don’t know why, as ugly as he was. Her alibi was that she was shooting at the time. Of course she was. Shooting. Hahahaha. Suspect #5 is Maude the Actress.

“One of our detectives, a real wisecracker, pointed out that we had investigated the suspects in the reverse order of the days of the week as far as their initials were concerned: Furman on Monday, Thurston on Tuesday, Wilbert on Wednesday, Templeton on Thursday, and Maude on Friday. The murder happened on a Sunday, and we had wrapped up our investigation by Saturday. Funny little coincidence, heh. On the Sabbath Day, the Lord rested, right?

“But no rest time for you would-be dicks. Figure out who did it. You have 24 hours.”

It is now Day 0. You have 24 hours.

Sometimes it will naturally come out, but it can be contained if we just remember that this is a game on a message board forum that 99.99% of the population of the Earth has never heard of before. No matter how successful anyone is, it means just about nothing.

After reading, I'm probably going to vote #3. Don't know if this has anything to do with the game though. Wilbert seems like the most likely suspect, Thurston next after him.

I'm also going to hold my vote. For all I know, some people may actually have clues to the correct answer. But on the face of it I'd go for option 4, the watchmaker.

There are things you can't forge, and things you can. A stutter I would say falls into the category of something that can be forged. So, for that matter, does a slur, or a particular gait. But number 4's alibi is the weakest.

Oh, do any players have information on this poll? You speak English, right? Like, you know the language. Do you know what a suspect is? If so, then I can give you a direct and definitive answer: You do, genius. Now look at the clues and get to work. Time's wasting.

The answer: all of them, if you are a marmot.

Oh, do any players have information on this poll? You speak English, right? Like, you know the language. Do you know what a suspect is? If so, then I can give you a direct and definitive answer: You do, genius. Now look at the clues and get to work. Time's wasting.
And so it begins - Epi trolls his own game.

I was using typical mafia terminology for "information", but I should have expected this answer. :P

Some further thoughts.

I wondered if Julius Caesar would have some significance. I can't see that there is anyone called Phyllis in the play. It's one I don't know well so I can't shed much light there.

Also, Maude seems to have the most viable motive. Her Phyllis was young (niece) and was kidnapped.

On the other hand, suspect one might have bullied Phyllis because he had a crush on her, and from the fur coat I infer the dead couple were rich, so I guess they could be Phyllis's rich parents.

The only one that seems really clean to me is the porter.

Hello everyone!

What could the killer have been looking at in the collar of that fur coat? Or is that just a red herring? Also, fur coat probably means people with money. Could it have been the casting director and his wife? I have a lot of questions. It's going to be hard for me to narrow it down to one suspect based on what we've got.

Maybe the killer had an allergy to a specific kind of fur.

lol, I'm allergic to certain kinds of fur so maybe you're onto something!

I don't understand why the propman isn't a suspect. I see motive there but don't know anything else about him, plus he's not one of the suspects. I just find that odd.

Hey guys, I will be modding this game. Since we have new players this game, just a quick fyi; the game mod is here to help you have a drama free game. If you want to complain about the game, each other, the host, the unfairness of life, or just vent, tell me, not the thread.

Any issues/anger/stress, aim it at me, not each other

This looks like it's going to be a wonderful game, marking the return of many old friends :cloud9:

I think it's the cobbler. He's faking the wheelchair thing, has no alibi, and didn't take the coat because he's a dog lover and the coat was fox fur or something else that reminded him of his dogs. He has ties to two significant Phyllis' who died tragically...maybe the couple were doctors who failed to notice that both his mother and sister were infected with TB (a disease that has been mostly erradicated in the US other than in people with severely compromised immune systems). And only old men wear flat caps. It is known.

Also, Wibert is the only one whose name initial matches with the day he was investigated....which seems nice.

Th is the common abbreviation for Thursday, and Thurston was investigated on Tuesday, as per the last paragraph. Templeton (T) was investigated on Thursday (Th).

Okay, so I've thought about this, and read the host post a few times.

It's difficult to judge which one is most likely the murderer, but my evaluation of the facts presented to us as in the host post most leads me to believe it was Templeton the Watchmaker. So I'm voting there now.
