The Syndicate University
I know a lot of folks here are in school at some level, whether it be high school, undergrad, graduate school, or on the other side of the classroom as a teacher. Tell us all what you're studying, what fancy-pants degrees you've earned, how miserable you are about the cost of education, whatever your experience is with school in here. Learning is fun, and even better when we can share it.
My ulterior motive in making this thread is that I am currently applying to several Master's programs and talking about it helps with the anxiety and procrastination of the process.

Re: The Syndicate University
If you're looking for something to help with the anxiety, I will tell you that I was an English major and decided I needed an MBA to fall back on in case I ever lost my job. I was TERRIBLE at math though and had to take the GMAT which at the time (don't know about now) had a big math component, and the degree itself was full of quantitative coursework. I studied though, took it and got in and then really applied myself in the courses like statistics. I can remember washing the dishes while listening to recordings I had made of my courses - I just immersed myself. I got the degree while working full time including a lot of travel so there was not a lot of goofing off during that time but I really felt like I had accomplished something after plowing through it. I won't lie, it was hard work but totally worth it.
What type of graduate degree do you want to get?

That's really cool, I admire that you went for something that you knew would be a challenge for you. I also majored in English and I'm applying to several programs in different areas of the Humanities. A couple generic English programs, one Humanities, and a "Criticism &
Theory" program that's really caught my eye recently and become my top choice. All of which are in Canada.

Re: The Syndicate University
Nice idea for a thread, Sloonei!
As many of you probably already know, I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Accounting, as well as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification, and have been fully immersed in the Accounting doctoral program at UTSA the past few years. Just now into my fourth year and I cannot emphasize how much I am looking forward to finally seeing the finish line soon. The whole ordeal -- from applying to PhD programs and taking the GMAT (for a second time) up until the current dissertation stage -- has easily the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.
Anything I can actually do to help or answer questions for those of you looking to get into graduate programs, even if in totally different areas than accounting or business, don't hesitate to ask or @ mention me.

Do you have a minor in bean dip recipes and if so, how did it go? I'm asking for a friend.

Re: The Syndicate University
Right now I'm stuck at what I assume will be the most trying step in my application process: asking for recommendation letters. I've never been good at asking for help and every time I send an email I imagine my very busy English professors shaking their heads at the nuisance that I am, even when they respond enthusiastically. The beautiful thing about Canadian grad schools is that they don't care about standardized testing.

Re: The Syndicate University
Oh wow thats great! And I wouldn't worry about asking your professors for recommendations. They are used to it and happy to do it for good students.Sloonei wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2017 10:57 am Right now I'm stuck at what I assume will be the most trying step in my application process: asking for recommendation letters. Re: The Syndicate University
I applied to three canadian programs. Canadian schools don't give a damn about standardized tests. It was a breeze. Now I have two american schools to apply to. They give a damn about standardized tests. I just went to register for the GRE. It's $205.

Re: The Syndicate University
So I just enrolled in an MBA program. In Business Management.
It's not exactly what I was looking for because it costs me money instead of earning me money, but hopefully it will get me the later more easily in the future.
Classes start tomorrow.

Re: The Syndicate University
graduate school isn't all bad. you get to call yourself a graduate student and undergrads think you're cool. also, you get student benefits and discounts cos you're still a student and maybe you can become a doctor and have to correct everyone telling them you're a PhD graduate and not a doctor-doctor.
