Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Hi guys
Roxy told me about your site and I was very intrigued. I hope that it's okay for me to post this here.
Invitation to The Mafia Championship Season 2
In 2013-2014 I hosted a Mafia Championship that featured more than 100 different players from more than 45 different mafia communities. Each community chose their best player to represent them and they battled it out. The best players from the initial games advanced to a finale game where an ultimate winner was decided. The event was endorsed and supported by the creator of mafia himself (Dmitry Davidoff) who even offered to have a private chat with the ultimate winner. Overall it was a huge success and spawned many cross-over games between sites.
I am hoping that you guys will want to participate in season 2
If you are interested, I need one representative to play on behalf of The Syndicate. How you decide this representative is completely up to you.
Now, this part is important: You should of course be aiming to send one of your best players. But more important than that, that person needs to be able to participate adequately in terms of activity. Be prepared for up towards 500 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. More on the game format below.
The current plan for season 2
• 65 different communities will be represented.
• 1 player per community for the entire season (preferably).
• 5 qualifying games will be played with 13 players each.
• 2 players advance to the finale from each game based on post-game votes.
• 3 additional players are granted wildcard spots.
Game setup
The game will have a very basic mafia setup: 3 mafia members, 9 vanilla townies and 1 cop. The cop starts the game with a random vanilla townie peek. Roles revealed upon death.
Some communities are not very used to playing basic setups like this, but for the first season, we utilized a setup with a good share of power roles, so this time around we are trying something new. For season 3 we will switch it up again.
Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day (so day will be 60 hours and night 12 hours on weekends). This means the game will last a maximum of 2 weeks.
Timeline
There will be 5 games in April and May. The first game is set to start April 6th. I would send out a Doodle to all the participants and they can then mark off which start date would suit them the best. Expect the finale to be played in June or July.
Also, it is a priority to ensure as much as possible that all the players in any given game has no prior history of playing with each other to ensure a level playing field, but I cannot 100 % guarantee that this won’t happen.

Hello, Thingyman! Welcome to The Syndicate!
This is fine, no worries. What you have proposed here sounds incredibly intriguing! I'm super excited, this sounds like a ton of fun.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
This sounds pretty awesome. Too bad I was always a lousy player. I'm amazed at how many mafia forums exist. I wonder how many of them formed out of tangential threads like The Piano from Lostpedia. I wonder how many formed out of divisions forming in existing forums, like Revolution Mafia formed out of SpoilerTV and The Piano.
What are the origins of The Syndicate anyway?

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Good question, G-Man!
I started The Syndicate for many reasons, but the key, succinct reason was I really wanted a place in which anyone who loved mafia could play together and have their own home, regardless of origin. At that time, The Piano was starting to die, and I knew many people on various internet communities as well as various aspects of my RL that all either loved playing mafia already or would love to do so.
I was introduced to mafia in the summer of 2010 after I signed up at Lostpedia a few months prior, in order to discuss the last episodes of the show. I had played the party version only once, and a forum version sounded like a ton of fun. I quickly fell in love with it and later that year I introduced the game to my buddies over at ProgArchives, a music (progressive rock) forum in which I had been incredibly active for a few years. I have frequented a lot of forums in my internet history, but I spent the bulk of my time there and had established a lot of friends that I knew would love this game. Some of my newfound mafia friends from Lostpedia (such as S~V~S) joined me in helping out the newbies, since literally none of them had played before. It was a hit, and it was there that I initially attracted some now Syndicate regulars (such as Epignosis). After I hosted two games, despite having really good reception, mafia at PA died off, as no one took over hosting, and the site was not primarily a mafia site. I knew many of them loved it, but my life grew busy and ProgArchives was a terrible forum from a technical standpoint for a host, so I didn't end up hosting any more games.
Fast forward two years or a bit less. Unfortunately, interest in mafia was waning among the LP/TP community, and soon after it died at both of those sites completely. I knew I could revive not only that community but build a much bigger community that combined both of the major groups as well as people I knew elsewhere (high school, college, work, family, other friends I met online). It took a while to develop the site, but with help from folks from both major communities as well as the other aspects of my life, it got started, and here we are, a little over two years later.

I would love to play, personally, but I don't think my schedule will allow me to devote so much time to a game. I would be more than happy to help determine who we send out though.
My preliminary vote goes to Juliets, I think she would be difficult for anyone to read and she'd be an excellent civvie. Also she's got ksite experience, so the format might not bug her.
Assuming she wants to that is :P

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
I can do 500 posts of content per 24 hours in a themed large game no problem, but for a 12 player vanilla game, I don't know. Especially back-to-back-to-back-to-back-etc. of such games.

To be clear, you would be playing in just one of them. And then maybe one more, if you qualify for the finale.Metalmarsh89 wrote:I can do 500 posts of content per 24 hours in a themed large game no problem, but for a 12 player vanilla game, I don't know. MM can't even read the instructions, or count. We can cross him off the list
I honestly don't think this is really the kind of thing we can vote on. There are so many great players here. I hope one of them can actually play

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
I think (and I thought of several people right off the bat that would be wonderful representatives) that we should maybe do a secret ballot. Everyone send a name into MP, this way there are no hard feelings, and the person we all most want to see play goes (assuming they want to~ not that I think I would get many votes, but I don't want to do it. I have found I don't play well in settings very different from ours.)
We need to get a name fairly quickly, I think. The first game starts in just over a week.

Secret ballot idea is good, although maybe we need to keep a list of people who can't, so that people don't waste their vote.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Well, given that I've already received a PM invitation from MP (I declined), I suspect most of the other players did as well, so MP could already have an idea of how many would be willing to represent us. I like the idea of a secret ballot, but I fear that if we restrict it only to players who openly sign up (which might in itself take some time) we'll get negative responses from at least 75% of the players, if not more. Maybe if we nominate someone through a ballot first, that person might treat the nomination as a sort of "the tribe wants you" instead of "hey wanna play for us" (of course, he might still decline out of the same weight of responsability).
Also, maybe we can make a secret ballot in which to nominate up to three players, in order of preference. MP or someone else can tally the votes and have in mind the three players with the most votes (also in order). If the player with the most votes declines, the runner-up could potentially take his place or if not, the third highest voted.

I like secret nominations. I wouldn't be surprised if most nominees decline, just because of the intense posting requirements. Is it really 500 post per player per 24 hours??

No not 500 posts per player but there could be up to 500 posts all together every 24 hours in the early stages of the game.

I echo this completely.S~V~S wrote:I think (and I thought of several people right off the bat that would be wonderful representatives) that we should maybe do a secret ballot. You want to play? If so, PM me. Then I will count you as an official submission. We need a quick turnaround, so let's say 48 hours for you to commit. I'll shoot a PM to everyone detailing this matter for urgency's sake, and to more easily disseminate the information.
I did already send PMs to some folks, only in the interest of time, to let them know about this opportunity immediately. Of course, absolutely anyone is welcome to play this, as they don't need an "invitation" from anyone. So if you didn't get a PM from me, please don't be offended, I only sent it to folks that first came to mind in terms of being able to meet the intense requirement, as well as players I thought would be interested, in order to quickly find out if there was interest.

I just sent everyone this PM. Placing it here for reference.MovingPictures07 wrote:Hello, Syndicate members!
I am excited to announce that we have been invited to the Mafia Championship: Season 2 by Thingyman. If you haven't yet heard about this, consult his thread here for details.
Essentially, it's a multi-game tournament where 65 different mafia communities send 1 of their own to represent them. It sounds incredibly exciting and is definitely a great opportunity for us, but it does have an intense time requirement.
If you want to commit as a possible player on behalf of The Syndicate, please PM me, and do so within 48 hours. We need a quick turnaround, so please get me a decision by then. If you have not PMed me by roughly 10:30AM EST on Sunday, March 29th, then you will not be eligible to play.
The players that commit to me within that time frame will then be made public so that all of us can vote on the player we want via secret ballot. This voting process will also be 48 hours max so that we can get a player to Thingyman ASAP.
Thanks!

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Also, regarding the time requirement, it appears the Final game last year ended with slightly over 12,000 posts. I think this is more tangible for us than the 500 posts per day number.
That's more than any game I've seen here, at LP, TP, RM, or anywhere that I've personally played since 2010.
I think it's definitely a good exercise for anyone who is thinking about playing to quickly check out any of the previous games, but particularly that one. It's pretty interesting!

I'm (obviously) not putting my name in for this, but I hope lots of people do! I look forward to voting for our Tribute!

Also something to keep in mind is they allow vote changing/unvoting which is probably the biggest contributor to the post count.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Probably the most unfortunate thing is the nominated player (if he/she chooses to enter) would not be able to play here effectively for a week or two.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
I had no idea that this Mafia Universe exists. We're like a tiny remote Mafia village with barely any connections to it.
Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
It should be said, though, that last season featured 25 players per game rather than 13, so it won't be quite that insane this year :PMovingPictures07 wrote:Also, regarding the time requirement, it appears the Final game last year ended with slightly over 12,000 posts.

Kind of like Tatooine? "If there's a bright center to the Mafia universe, your on the forum that it's farthest from."Long Con wrote:I had no idea that this Mafia Universe exists. We're like a tiny remote Mafia village with barely any connections to it.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
Check out that final game.
Day 3 - monstrman is lynched, and flips Vanilla Mafia
Day 4 - Top Tier Tom is lynched, and flips Mafia Jack-Of-All-Trades
Day 5 - well named is lynched, and flips Mafia One Time Isolator
Day 6 - arcbell is lynched, and flips Mafia Two Time Vigilante
Sucks to be mafia when you've got those kinds of civilians hunting.

I echo rabbit's sentiment. Let's win this thing.
Yes! Good point. :P That is true.Thingyman wrote:It should be said, though, that last season featured 25 players per game rather than 13, so it won't be quite that insane this year :PMovingPictures07 wrote:Also, regarding the time requirement, it appears the Final game last year ended with slightly over 12,000 posts. That is interesting, thanks for sharing, BR!
RYM, eh? It'll be interesting to see who they select.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
I've played at RYM and know some folks there, one in particular really well, but the rest not too well. I've been on that site a ton for musical discovery, not as much in the off-topic area.
I recognize some other sites from the list, but don't really frequent them other than really occasionally and not (yet) as a member.

Re: Invitation to Mafia Championship Season 2
I'm on Board Game Geek all the time browsing/reading ratings/trying to get good enough at board games to beat my damn gloaty BF. Had no idea they played mafia there! Will definitely have to look into it. I bet they're good!
