In my quest to retool and make functional all of my old game ideas, I came to this one first. Here goes nothing...
I have no idea what sort of category this belongs in. For now, I'll propose this as a Job, but it may be more of a "special" game due to its nature. I'll let the admins decide that one.
MAFIA ON ICE
This NHL-themed game will feature two games being played simultaneously, and eventually merged into one.
Game A: Eastern Conference
This game will be role madness and feature all 16 teams from the NHL's Eastern Conference.
Game B: Western Conference
This game will be role madness and feature all 16 teams from the NHL's Western Conference (including to upcoming Seattle Kraken).
Both Game A and Game B will involve small mafia teams trying to take out the remaining civvie teams. Will there be 3p's? Maybe. I'm still working through all the individual powers for each NHL team role.
Each NHL team in Mafia On Ice is assigned three rival teams within their conference. As teams are eliminated from the game, those teams assigned a rival that gets eliminated will receive Slap Shots for later use. When Team X's #1 rival is eliminated (whether through the day poll or night kill), Team X earns two Slap Shots. When either of Team X's #2 or #3 rivals are eliminated, Team X gets 1 Slap Shot. So each player can earn up to four Slap Shots to use in the second stage of the game.
As with the NHL, only eight teams from each conference make the playoffs. In following this standard, both Game A and Game B will suspend play after eight players are eliminated. The remaining eight teams from each conference will then merge into...
Game C: The Stanley Cup Playoffs
Here's where it gets a little tricky. There are two separate victories in this game. There is the standard factional victory (mafia or civ), but there is also an individual victory because Game C is Last Man Standing format. Only one person will be live to claim the Stanley Cup at the end of it all. The will get a win for themselves, but also extend a win to their faction.
The mafia faction from both the Eastern and Western Conferences will continue to exist, and each mafia faction will retain a night kill. They still want to push their mafia faction on to victory. The remaining civvie teams still want to eliminate the mafia factions. The entire faction (Mafia East, Mafia West, or Civvies) will claim group victory. It won't matter if you didn't make Game C- you can still have a share of faction victory.
In Game C, all of the remaining players will be seeded using a top secret seeding matrix known only to the host. Highest seed is matched up against the lowest seed. Game C is structured in Rounds, like the Stanley Cup Playoffs. If the #16 seed is eliminated, the #1 seed advances, while the rest of the teams play on until one team from each Round 1 matchup is eliminated. Round 1 features 16 players set into 8 pairs. Round 2 features 8 players set into 4 pairs. Round 3 features 4 players set into 2 pairs. When two players remain, it's the Stanley Cup Finals. This final round of action, and the ultimate individual winner, will be determined by a number of factors.
During Game C, there will be elimination polls during the day. The team paired against a team eliminated by the day poll will advance to the next round. At night, the mafia factions have a chance to kill, but their kill will only work if they target someone paired against a member of their mafia team. If they try to kill a player not matched up against one of their ranks, the kill fails.
Also at night, players have the opportunity to use their Slap Shots. Each Slap Shot is like a 1-shot kill. Slap Shots only work when used on the player you are paired up against. If you target someone who you are not paired up against in that round, your Slap Shot fails and you lose it. Every player gets one Slap Shot for advancing to Game C, plus however many Slap Shots they earned from rivals being eliminated. Slap Shots will still be earned for rival teams eliminated during Game C. I may also consider awarding an additional Slap Shot for each round of Game C that a player advances to. If two players paired against each other each take a Slap Shot at the other on the same night, the Slap Shots collide and neither one is killed.
So, all players have to be careful of how many Slap Shots they use up. You can rely on the poll and/or mafia kills to take out your opponents, but players will need to take a chance on using their Slap Shots eventually.
Ideally, this would be a game for 32 players, but that's highly unlikely these days. As such, players can sign up to be in one or both games, so long as we reach a total of 32 roles filled when all is said and done. If one player joins both Game A and Game B, and both of their roles make it to Game C, they will appear on the poll twice- once for their Western team and once for their Eastern team. I plan to stagger the start of Game A and Game B, so that Game B ends a day phase when Game A is in its night phase. Right now, I envision this as 48/24 with closed nights.
So, it's Mafia, but then it's not Mafia, but it's also still Mafia in a way.
