Re: What Song Are You Listening to Right Now?
Not just one song but entire albums. The CD player in my work computer crapped out on me a few weeks back and Pandora is too repetitive for me lately, so I've been listening to albums on YouTube. One thing I've found that's neat to do is listen to an artist's or groups discography in chronological order. I already have at least one of the albums by each band I've listened to so far but I'm open to expanding my musical horizons. Any recommendations?
Last Friday I started listening to Van Halen's discography. I finished up with their last three albums this morning. None of their other albums could compare to the original Van Halen. Every track on that album is a delight except for the underwhelming "Little Dreamer." There are several good tracks on their other albums but they never put a full album of awesome together since their debut. There were also a few bright spots amidst the Hagar years. Van Halen III was very weak. Gary Cherone was little more than a poor substitute for Hagar. Their most recent album, A Different Kind of Truth, actually felt like they recaptured a lot of the fun and sass that made their first album so memorable.

Re: What Song Are You Listening to Right Now?
The new James Bond theme song:
Personally I find it too bland for my tastes. It took a while for the theme from "Skyfall" to grow on me, so maybe this one will be the same way. It's hard to make out some of what Sam Smith is singing when he goes into his high-end falsetto range. I'll need to listen to it a few more times but it just feels too slow and somber. Not at all what I would expect from a James Bond theme. It doesn't seem to set the right tone for an action-spy film.

Joanna Newsom - Waltz of the 101st Lightborne
She's my favorite lyricist and her new album is right on part with the previous 3. Incredibly consistent.

Re: What Song Are You Listening to Right Now?
Today I am listening to Led Zeppelin's albums in reverse order. I started with In Through the Out Door (I don't really count Coda as a true Zeppelin album since it's just a hodgepodge of previously unreleased tracks). Right now I'm almost done with Houses of the Holy. "The Ocean" just started. Good stuff.

Chapter 3 of my journalism textbook starts out with this:
"Facts are simple and facts are straight
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with points of view
Facts don't do what I want them to"

Re: What Song Are You Listening to Right Now?
Both of those would probably be in my top 10 if I were to sit down a hash out such a list. It's a hard choice to make because I love most of Zeppelin's albums in their entirety but off the top of my head, I have to go with "When the Levee Breaks." The song itself is not terribly complex in nature and there's a lot of production trickery behind the final product but it's the song that got me hooked on Zeppelin.MovingPictures07 wrote:It's the former for me.Epignosis wrote:I have a hard time deciding if my favorite Zeppelin song is "Achilles' Last Stand" or "The Rain Song."G-Man wrote:Today I am listening to Led Zeppelin's albums in reverse order. I grew up listening to their songs on classic rock radio but really got into exploring music when I was in college. I worked in the college library and got into early blues music, especially pre-World War 2 Delta blues. My sophomore year roommate was a Music Recording Technology major and had me listen to "When the Levee Breaks" on vinyl through high quality stereo system and a pair of $500 headphones he used for his studio work. My mind was blown and I spent the next two weeks listening to nothing but Led Zeppelin's albums.
It may seem like a passe choice but it was an influential moment for me expanding my musical tastes.

Re: What Song Are You Listening to Right Now?
Going back to my childhood year today and listening to every Weezer album in order of release (omitting Death to False Metal because it's just a collection of studio leftovers). Years ago, I burned the Blue Album and Pinkerton onto one CD. I love the transition between "Only In Dreams" and "Tired of Sex". Pinkerton is such a unique album because it's unlike everything else Weezer did in their career.
Weezer had a string of weak albums (Make Believe, Red, Raditude, Hurley) but if you take best tracks off of those CDs, you can make a pretty solid, albeit all over the place, Weezer album. Their most recent album was pretty good and they have another one coming out this spring. I'll try to listen to the singles from the new album (another self-titled album) at the end of the day if I have time.
