For what it's worth, I get super ridiculous motion sickness with everything. I get sick from tying my shoelaces in the car, or reading too many street signs as a passenger, or even not eating just enough or too much. Hell, I sometimes get motion sickness from folding laundry, because I have a pathetic weak stomach/inner ear. BUT on the one cruise I went on, I never once felt sick and had a fabulous timeSpacedaisy wrote:MP and I expect to make this list of "some" people. We will even travel to the east coast as well to make it happen and of course met some other awesome people too. I have not discussed this with him yet... but he will agree.Golden wrote:I am very jealous that I've missed all of this...
But my wife and I are secretly planning a trip to the East Coast in 2017, and I'm already thinking about how to finally meet some of you.
Sadly, a cruise is not ideal for Alex, he gets super motion sickness. Like the minute he sets foot in a boat. I have taken a cruise before and most if the time you can't even tell. I have told him this but he has zero desire too risk it.

After reading this thread, I'm even more sad that I couldn't make the wedding.
I totally vote for an east coast meet up and approve of DC!!! Or Philly, even.

Of course, prices will change according to when we all decide to book and what not. But, I figure discussion has to start somewhere. I would love to be able to do this and for LOTS of us to go. If you get motion sickness, don't get a room at the front of the boat. And...if a cruise is not the best option, we can always just plan to meet up at a specific hotel/beach and and hang out together for a week. I want to go here sometime soon:

I am skeptical of the cruise, since I get really insane motion sickness, but considering Blooper's testimony, I might be willing to try it.

Re: Meetups
Okay y'all, it's February and we need to start planning a meet-up for this summer before everything is booked! What about this idea? Here is a 5 bedroom house in Jacksonville Beach, FL. There are several others like these, some more expensive than others. This one in particular would be $3,249 for the week of June 20th - June 27th. Split among 14 people, that's under $250 per person for the week. Epi is going to put up a poll so you can vote if you are interested and you can tell me when you are available. But we have to work fast as many of these places are booking up already.

Re: Meetups
This is my alternative to a cruise which we cannot afford. A cruise would be $450-$550 for 4-5 days per person so we would have to pay 5 times that. But if we did something like this then Epi and I could get away with just paying around $500 total
So I understand SVS. If you want to look for a cheaper route, by all means, you are welcome to.

Here's one in myrtle beach - https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p7004067 for dates June 4-11, it would only be $3,300 or a little over $200 a person if 16 go which is how many it sleeps.

But they are visiting me in Oregon this summer, so I wouldn't be able to work out a cost-effective trip east.

Yeah my issue is I am living in a house that is for sale. So when it sells, I will have 2 months to get moved, and it could happen tomorrow, or it could happen a month before the planned meeting. So I don't know if I can afford it, and I can't commit timewise since my timeline can change at any moment. If the house sells 2 months or more before the trip date I MIGHT be able to do it.

Re: Meetups
This all sounds absolutely amazing and totally something Annie and I both would be interested in, but unfortunately my schedule is a complete bitch this year, and I can't afford literally a weekend or more of free time until likely November or later.
I have to teach 200 students this summer and it encompasses all sessions, so from May-August I'm blocked out on that front alone; in addition I'll have 2nd year paper, figuring out dissertation topic and committee, and then studying for my comprehensive exam which should be in September. I keep telling myself it's the sacrifices I have to make now, but it'll be worth it when I have the option to take summers off and only work on research once I have a job.
That said, I know that we both would be fully interested in meetups in subsequent years, and I fully support such endeavors.
I think it'd be freaking awesome to arrange things like this on an annual basis, and I'm all for it in terms of my personal particiaption on that basis once I'm done with my schedule being a PhD program-driven butthole.

I've won a lot of games. I've hosted some games. The end.

Re: Meetups
As awesome as a Syndication (see what I did there?
) sounds, you'll have to count me out for this year. If my wife and I do any traveling, I'll be sure to see if anyone will be in the vicinity of where we're going. So far all I know is that my sister-in-law is getting married in Washington DC at the end of July.

We went to Washington, DC to visit Logan (llama) a few years back. It was a great trip.

Re: Meetups
This would be awesome! I'm not sure I'll have time at all this year, but if I do it'll be in July.

Re: Meetups
I'd love to be able to but I don't think I'd ever be able to afford going anywhere, I'll try to keep an eye on it just in case though.
