I know I'm new, and forgive my impertinence, but no way is Ernest Hemingway the first off the list.

I'm pretty sure I've never read books by anyone on this list, but I keep doing this because I'd be more likely to read the Great Gatsby than anything Hemingway wrote.

I do actually feel a little guilty that I've never read Twain or Steinbeck.

I don't like the Great Gatsby, or F Scott, he was a drunk who only wrote 4 books and got lucky with one of them. It's considered a classic and there are about 3 or 4 others that should be off this list first. Where as Hemingway was a drunk who wrote a ton of books and has 4 classics (A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, The Old Man and the Sea, and For Whom the Bell Tolls). I've only read Old Man and Sun also rises, his stuff is pretty depressing, he's the master of the impotent hero who can never have what he desires because of past mistakes. Fun fact they were drinking buddies.

I don't know what your tastes are but for my money Steinbeck is my favorite of any of these (well maybe Whitman will give him a run for his money), Of Mice and Men is a really quick read (less then 200 pages) and would be a good starting point.

I hate Salinger, his only readable book is whiny spoiled rich kid awful, and his others are just him showing off his vocabulary.

Sorry, I'm a bit too serious about American Literature.

If it's any consolation, I don't really read New Zealand literature either. I think it takes itself too seriously.

As far as classic literature is concerned, I've read a lot of British classic literature. With American literature, I've read a lot of modern authors (although even in modern literature I probably enjoy British authors the most).

Have you seen the film 'Midnight in Paris'? I think it has a great characterisation of Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

I haven't read any book originating from New Zealand, though I did see Whale Rider (that counts right?). I think my issue is more as a result of the view that they American literature is the bastard child and inferior by far to British. Aside from the history, I don't really think that's a fair assessment, accounting for tastes, I think they're pretty equal since the 19th century.

As far as classic lit goes, they all pale in my eyes to those crazy 19th century Russian writers.

I kind of gave up on Woody after that movie with Jason Biggs, and that one movie with Will Ferrell was the final straw. I've been hearing good things recently and probably should give his recent stuff a go. Considering how many interesting people are in the Lost Generation I probably should have watched it already.

Poor Henry James, didn't want to be an American and eventually became British. I guess I can get behind him being the first off the list since he didn't die "American".
