For those who don't know, Simon is autistic.
Or something like that. Autism is a funny spectrum.
Today he hurt his sister accidentally and then laughed at her when she yelled at him.
We, being the parents we are, laid into him about that sort of behavior. I was ready to take away privileges.
After spending almost half an hour with him, I finally understood why Simon was laughing.
He wasn't laughing at his sister- it was just that her yelling at him reminded him of a character from a recent show he saw on Netflix in which a female character yells at things and is apparently really, really funny.
Even when we mentioned the show to his sister (who was still half in tears), she started laughing.
I didn't punish him.
++++
In a related story, we are in the midst of a game of Risk.
After half the competitors went to bed, I showed Simon a live performance of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears, a song he likes. I figured he'd like to see the players behind the song.
He said, "They're just copying what we're trying to do tonight. Copycats."
Hmm?
It took me a moment.
Everybody wants to rule the world.
Risk.
I love the way this kid thinks.
Ten years old, and I'm only beginning to unravel his process.
Maybe everybody wants to rule the world.
I just want to understand his.

I'm really just in 99%, which is apparently significantly less impressive than full totality. I forget where exactly in Oregon Marmot lives but he might be in the actual 100% band, not sure.

I'm in Eugene, but I camped out with some friends last night, and we hiked up a little mountain to witness it at 100% totality. 2 whole minutes of darkness!!! And you could stare at the sun (or more accurately the moon) the whole time. Wicked awesome!
And being on top of a mountain, we could see the shadow come and go. We could also see Mt. Hood off in the distance lit up in the sun. The hype was very much warranted.

In a nutshell:
They told us not to teach grammar because it isn't tested by the state.
You know what does test grammar?
The ACT.
Th ACT scores tanked last year.
Well duh.
So now if we don't get ACT scores up, we're in trouble.
It's the usual bullshit.

Well... Harvey is coming. I didn't go grocery shopping earlier today or yesterday so we're kind of flying by the seat of our pants. Hope we don't lose power, but it's a definite chance. They are calling for somewhere between 10-20 inches of rain here in San Antonio. Insane. Glad we have a second floor apartment right about now. Ugh...

Good lucky Daisy. I am so glad it's not coming my way with the shape my husband is in but I'm sorry its coming your way. Stay safe!
Epi, that is just asinine. First, just the whole concept of not teaching grammar at all - dang, do we want people growing up and using dang in sentences? And secondly, that they didn't think through the more immediate consequences of the ACT. If I were an ACT taker I would be pissed that I didn't learn what I was supposed to to score well on the test that would help me get into college. And I suppose this is all the teachers fault that the scores went down. smh

How on bloody Earth is "not teaching grammar" even supposed to be a school (or state?) regulation?

I have been introduced to the activity of Catan while on a brief holiday with friends. I have suffered defeat on my first attempt to the only friend who knew how to play beforehand out of our party of five.
There was no second opportunity to play on subsequent evenings.
How will I now be able to claim my revenge?
I demand satisfaction.

My commute isn't long, so I only got hear a few songs, but...
The radio display in the car was advertising a number people can call to send money to Harvey victims.
The musical selections during this stretch seemed to me increasingly...troll-like.
"I Can See for Miles" by...not The Who, but Styx (named after the river of the dead)
"The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin.
Followed by "Born on the Bayou" by CCR.

I just put my oldest little girl on the school bus a few minutes ago. She's going to do just fine in Kindergarten.
The little boy she shares the bus stop with might be another story. As soon as the bus pulled up, he took off running the other direction!
Knowing his mother and father, I bet he'll get quite the earful while they drive him into school on the first day.

Well, they are pretty sure it's going to make a direct hit on Florida it's just a matter of where. It seems to be shifting north which is good for us but not good for people on the east coast. And lol you are right, I have it as planned out as I can given all the uncertainty.

Re: Random~
I have invented a board game prototype.
Our family played it tonight. I'd say it's good stuff.
It's a sci-fi game that can be as cooperative or as competitive as you like depending on the number of players you have.
We have 5 players, so we ran a 4 vs 1. We only got 30 minutes in due to bedtimes, but so far, I think it's great.
