Well, Lemmy died a week or so before Bowie
For me, Rickman will always be Metatron

Skip softly, my moonbeams, for I have heard tell
That the stairs up to heaven lead straight down to hell

Re: Movie News
So sad to lose Alan Rickman

Re: Movie News
I don't know where else to put this, and it doesn't warrant its own thread, but have any of you ever subscribed to MUBI? It's a film service where each day they add one more movie to whats available but each film is available only 30 days so there is a rotating list of 30 films to watch?
I've been on it for a few months now, and it's amazing. They've had Bresson, Greenaway, Varda, Godard, Herzog, so many auteurs, but also many many oddball films I would never have seen on my own... giallo films, Italian gangster movies, tons of documentaries, shorts, experimental films from Chris Marker, silent films....
I highly recommend it!

I'm glad DC keeps tricking me into getting hyped for their movies and then having bad word of mouth turn me off from actually going to see them.

Re: Movie News
Disney is going to purchase 21st Century Fox's film division (TV entertainment division too). This is a huge consolidation in the industry and would give Disney almost 40% of the market share for the US and Canada. This will bring the X-Men, Alien, and Predator film series under Disney's control. Fox also had distribution deals with the Deadpool and Avatar film series.
The other big play here is that Disney would scoop up all of Fox's TV content (X-File, Simpsons, Family Guy), which they can use as leverage when they roll out their own streaming service to compete against Netflix.
This is huge but will it be allowed? I assume there has to be antitrust hearings because Disney would dwarf all the other major studios.

From what I hear of the US government, I won't be surprised by it failing to oppose any kind of corporate abuse.

The ICS, an international group that I'm privileged to be a part of, released their nominees today!
https://icsfilm.org/our-yearly-awards/2 ... -nominees/
Call Me by Your Name Comes Out Peachy Keen at ICS Awards
Honoring films released in the USA in 2017.
The 15th ICS Awards saw Luca Guadagnino’s lush summer romance Call Me by Your Name blow away the competition with a record-setting 11 nominations, including picture, director, adapted screenplay and four acting nods. Next in line with 8 mentions was Paul Thomas Anderson’s gorgeously poisonous Phantom Thread, about a high-fashion couple perpetually ripping apart and re-stitching their relationship.
The presumptive Oscar frontrunners were mostly absent here, except for Greta Gerwig’s charming Lady Bird, which garnered picture, director, actress (Saoirse Ronan), supporting actress (Laurie Metcalf), ensemble and original screenplay honors. Also scoring 6 noms each were Bertrand Bonello’s wildly cinematic story of young Parisian terrorists, Nocturama, and James Gray’s impeccably crafted jungle adventure, The Lost City of Z. Denis Villeneuve rounded out the best director lineup with his soul-searching replicants in Blade Runner 2049, which tallied 4 nominations.
Actors/actresses in LGBTQ roles were strongly represented at ICS this year, including Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer for Call Me by Your Name, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart and Arnaud Valois for BPM, and Daniela Vega for A Fantastic Woman.
In keeping with ICS tradition, the Unreleased Films list features 20 underseen films that our members were lucky enough to catch at festivals on five continents, and for which they voted passionately, but which failed to receive theatrical distribution in the USA in 2017.
Winners of the 15th ICS Awards will be announced on February 4, 2018.

Re: Movie News
Have fun with the jury duty. Will you spoil us with your picks?
I've seen all but 4 of the Picture nominees and it could've been just 2 if I wouldn't have been lazy this week and watched Nocturama and A Quiet Passion. Whatever On the Beach at Night Alone is escaped me until now and I see it nominated in plenty categories. No changes seeing Phantom Thread in theaters, so I'm hopeless there unless a screener "shows up".
Not sure I should comment in detail, in case you don't need any opinion to influence you or anything, but whoa does that Foreign category have some "Cahier du cinema"-ish picks. I have no seen four (where on Earth can I even find Lav Diaz?!), there's one I consider a slight underdog and two I really disliked.
One movie goes into a bit of nomination overkill in the acting categories, but that's just me. The Supppoting Actress category has only one serious distinction, but that's just me.
Another whoa for the Ensemble category, Sieranevada, noice. It kinda is a wild team effort in it, heh. I think only that and another movie qualify for a genuine ensemble cast recognition, so I find the other two I've seen a bit odd.

I wish that Sony would just let Marvel do their thing. Making Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man is maybe the worst Spider-Man-adjacent idea anyone’s had yet, and some of those other movies have some real head scratchers ...

"Abjectly terrible" is the correct answer in regards to PJ's KK.
And fave Jimmy Stewart for me is prob Anatomy of a Murder, but yeah, he's pretty much solid in everything he ever did.
