Paperback. Inevitably removing the slip-on covers from hardbacks and then losing them is a bit of a nuisance. They're also less conducive to staying open without extra effort.

What do you think of the new MLB rule changes?

I like the extra roster spot and two-way designation. Both seem like steps to better fit the game to modern strategies, and I'm excited to see if we'll start to get more players who are allowed to pitch and hit or if this improves the quality of pitcher at-bats in general. The three batter minimum is the controversial one, and while it doesn't strike me as the most effective way to combat pace of play issues, I'm at least intrigued to see what it does to bullpen management. It puts extra pressure on relievers to not suck, and on managers to A) not overwork their best relievers and B) pick the right guy for the right situation.

How do you feel about the Houston Astros and their cheating scandal?

It’s shady because technology is involved. If it was just old-school observation or even a guy in the stands with binoculars, then it’s different I guess. Football players learn opponents’ snap counts and formations. Hockey players learn their opponents shift changes and set piece formations. I don’t watch basketball, but I bet there is an element of it there too. They created a clever signal system. The way signs are stolen is the clincher though. Maybe even binoculars is wrong. The denial and lack of remorse speaks more to character than sports ethics. Even if you steal a sign and know what’s coming, you still have to hit the ball. It’s not a guarantee.

What would it take for you to enjoy watching ice hockey more?

Nothin'. Hockey's great and the best sport to watch as a neutral observer. I just don't have the emotional investment that I do with baseball, and it's not as prominently exposed as basketball and football, so I don't receive it passively like I do with those sports. I can tune into any NBA game and name at least one or two players on either team. So I guess my answer is: more mainstream exposure. Perhaps if I settle into Canada this will stop being an issue.

My answer for that would probably be different if I was a man, I would want to go further back, maybe even to Elizabethan times. But I would think about 1900, alof of things in the world changed in a very short time in the early 20th century, it would be interesting to watch progress happen knowing what the outcome would be.

My second grade teacher. My most distinct memory from the class is that she taught us to spell lawyer wrong (she insisted it was "loyer"). Then years later my mom mentioned that the teacher had a reputation among the parents for heavily favoring the girls in the class. I was too oblivious to observe the distinction back then, but I do remember several missed recesses for what seemed like unfair reasons to my 8 year old brain.
