Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER IV]

First Mafioso

Chapter IV
1 This is an account of how Job, a crestfallen man who knew much trouble, was stoned: 2 Unnumbered calamities had befallen the people of Sin-d’kaht, and after casting lots, it was determined that Job had brought misfortunate upon them. 3 “Take Job to the city gates and stone him,” it was said. “Then our people will know peace.” 4 But Job heard of their intentions, and hid himself away in a cave outside of the city. 5 But when Job hid himself in a cave outside the city, the people grew furious and made burnt sacrifices to an idol, a golden marmot.* 6 That same hour, the earth trembled, and the earth swallowed Job. 7 When no one came to claim his land or his possessions, Job’s enemies raided his home and began to claim objects for themselves. They were like shameful thieves, for each man did what was right in his own sight. 8 In their greed, they came to know Job’s other name, Jude. 9 After Job was swallowed by the earth, caravans of foreigners came roundabout Sin-d’kaht, and trumpets sounded. 10 When the people had gathered together, it was decreed that a contest would ensue at about the third hour on the fifth day.** 11 “People of Sin-d’kaht: Long have you feared your neighbors, whose warring is endless. We seek a peaceful end to our quarrel, so that our young men may know old age. 12 “Choose this night whom you will serve, whether the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites or the Jebusites. 13 Then shall one from each tribe rise up to do battle; the victorious one shall be rewarded with his people. Pray to your gods*** if you would pledge yourselves to ending our dispute.”

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER III]

10 In those days, there was a simple man named Gideon. 11 On his way home, Gideon met the Egyptian emissary who had beset Paul with serpents. 12 “Pharaoh sounds like failure,” Gideon said. 13 This incensed the emissary, who shouted at Gideon in the Egyptian tongue.
14 But Gideon could not understand the emissary’s words, and his ears heard, “Aiight we gotta cut this out. I'm part of the problem too. We all gotta step up because lets be honest the good guys never win these sock games and it's because we all slack off. 15 Sloth's a sin and an ugly one at that so lets put our game faces on. 16 We only need to lynch 5 of these beancounters and we'll all happily walk hand in hand to noah's ark with smiles on our faces and God's love in our hearts. 17 and maybe we have to deal with these horsemen I mean who knows. but if we pull ourselves together and start really paying attention and participate and have faith in EACH OTHER we can beat these guys. Amen.” 18 Gideon marveled at the sound of the strange words, and did not retaliate when the emissary struck him down. 19 Hagar, a maidservant, witnessed the death of Gideon, but decided in her heart to say nothing about it. 20 What she did was evil in the sight of the Lord, so He put her to death. 21 When the Lord’s anger no longer burned against the people of Sin-d’kaht, He declared, “We are not strangers to love. You know My commands, at home or abroad. 22 A full commitment is what I am thinking of. You will not get this from any other God. I will never forsake you.”

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER III]

Chapter III
1 When the serpents of Egypt had killed Paul, they did creep along the dust of the earth and took refuge in the tent of Mary Magdalene. 2 And it came to pass that in the morning, witnesses heard the sound the serpents made ere Mary Magdalena was awake.
3 “Surely she is a conspirator with the emissary from Egypt, who brought this evil among us. She must be destroyed,” they reasoned. 4 And so they were exceedingly vexed with the presence of Mary Magdalene, and went into her tent and slew her. 5 And when they prepared the body for burial, they were astonished, saying, “Wherefore did a man name himself Mary Magdalene?” 6 Another answered, saying, “We have surely sinned, for in the tent I found the seal of Israel, that which belongs only to King David. He hid himself as a woman to hide from his enemies” 7 And they tore their clothes and beat their breasts, having slain a king of Israel. 8 The Lord heard of their sins, and His wrath burned against the people of Sin-d’kaht. 9 And there was much linki.

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER II]

8 And lo, while they were stoning Cain, an emissary from Egypt came to the gates. 9 “I am seeking the one called Paul of Sin-d’kaht,” he said to the people. “Show him to me so that I might carry out my master’s wishes.” 10 They answered, “Paul is addressing the crowd gathered in the marketplace. He is always addressing the crowd. His words are like blades of grass in a field. Number them if you can.” 11 The emissary from Egypt found Paul preaching, even as darkness had spread upon the land. 12 “Hear O children of Sin-d’kaht, the wisdom of Solomon: 13 ‘If I have any wisdom to share, it is that heathens do not want to get caught, and so we must look for them in unconventional places. 14 Look at those who voted for Cain at the very end of Chapter I and see if they were setting him up for an easy lynch in Chapter II. 15 But also pay attention to those who do not seek attention. 16 Bathsheba, mother, why must you betray me with your heathenism? Look closely at her words, children of God, for she walks among us, but she is not one of us.’” 17 When Paul had finished, he welcomed the emissary into his home and sat at meat with him. 18 “What is your message, friend?” Paul asked. “It is here in this vessel,” the emissary answered. “Open it and see.” 19 When Paul brake the vessel, behold, serpents spilled forth into his lap and tasted his flesh.

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER II]

First Mafioso

Chapter II
1 Now there was a man living among the people of Sin-d’kaht whose name was Cain. He had slain his brother and had sought refuge in those lands. 2 Cain labored in the fields as a hired laborer. His abode was a tent near the fields where he worked. 3 One day a plowshare went missing. There were eight who said to their master, “Yes, it was Cain who took the plowshare.” 4 At midday, while most of the hired laborers were still laboring in the field, the eight took their master to Cain’s tent. 5 The missing plowshare was not in Cain’s tent, but rather they found the Urim and the Thummin. 6 So the master reasoned, “Why does he have the Urim and the Thummin, relics which belong unto the priests of Israel? He is no priest. He must yet be a thief.” 7 And verily did the people take Cain to the eastern gate and stone him for thievery.

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER I]

15 The night that Samson was stoned, the angel of Death came upon the people of Sin-d’kaht, and the firstborn of all who had risen up against Samson died. 16 In the midst of the mourning, Martha, who was childless, set about preparing for the next day’s meal. 17 Whilst she was preparing the dung with salt, a woman came, offering to help her. 18 “I do not need your help, hunny,*” Martha said to the foreign woman. 19 “As it should be, for I did not come into this dwelling to help you, but to slay you.” 20 The foreign woman laid her hands upon her and buried Martha’s face in the dung heap until Martha could not take breath. 21 And it came to pass that Martha was slain by Jezebel, wife of Ahab, which added unto the dead of Sin’d-kaht that Night.

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER I]

Lot wrote:(not to mention, he sacrificed his daughter as a burnt offering.)
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31 then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands. 33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back. 36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. 37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. 38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel, 40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

++++

I do not believe Jephthah sacrificed his daughter as a burnt offering. That doesn't make sense, for three reasons:

1. Human sacrifice was prohibited among the Hebrews under the Mosaic covenant. Granted, the Israelites did plenty of evil things during this period, but that one was universally frowned upon among them. Jephthah was remembered as a conqueror and hero, so it would seem strange that a man who knew the rules would choose to burn his only daughter knowing such a thing would not please God.

2. E.W. Bullinger points out that the word often translated "and" in verse 31 ("whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.") could reasonably be translated "or." Prior to that verse is this one: "Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon." The Spirit of the Lord led Jephthah to swear burning his daughter as an offering to the Lord? Nah.

3. Notice that the lament from the daughter is not that her skin is about to be extra crispy, but that she will never know a man. Her virginity was bewailed, not her life. If you were about to die a horrible death, would your first instinct be to mourn the fact that you've never had sex? If so, congratulations, you will enjoy the next American Pie film. The text explicitly tells us that the vow meant that "she knew no man." If she's a human torch, that much could be assumed, right?

No, Jephthah's anguish is spelled out in verse 34: He has no grandchildren. Now he shall surely have none. In the patriarchal mindset of the time, Jephthah's daughter belongs to God, and therefore cannot belong to a husband. That is why he is pissed (and I've read a couple of articles that claim that the cultural clues indicate that Jephthah's daughter was a total brat who knew her father vowed this and wanted to be a bitch. I don't know if I agree on that point, but it was interesting reading all the same).

Re: Biblical Mafia [CHAPTER I]

7 When the servant of the Lord spake unto the people of Sin-d’kaht all the things the Lord bade him to utter, the people were sore afraid. And they began to quarrel. 8 While they quarreled, a certain man named Samson accused Samuel of adultery, that Samuel had bedded many female-identified socks (socks is the Sin-d’kaht word for foreigners). 9 When several witnesses came forth declaring that Samuel had not slept with any socks, Samson tore his hair and threw himself to the ground, confessing that he did not truly believe that Samuel was guilty of this sin. 10 The people turned their faces against Samson. “If you did not believe Samuel was evil, wherefore did you bear false witness against him?” 11 And verily did they take him to the city gates and stone him. 12 When they had done this, a traveler from Israel passed by and saw what they had done. 13 “This is a wicked generation indeed, for I know this man you call Samson. In Israel, he is called James, the Son of Alphaeus.” 14 At this, the people returned to their homes, fearful of what calamity may await them during the Night.

Re: Biblical Mafia [PREFACE]

First Mafioso
Chapter I
1In the last year of the reign of King Mooby, everyone did what was right in his own sight. 2The city of Mafioso, in the region of Sin-d’kaht, was filled with evil, for many wicked people sought refuge there, hiding their countenances, as was the custom in that place. 3Their transgressions were an affront to the Lord. Among their sins was covetousness, idol worship, murder, fornication, and grave infodumping. 4When the Lord’s anger waxed mightily against them, He sent His servant to warn them that judgment was at hand. 5“This is what the Lord says,” the servant declared. “Purge the wickedness from among you, and then you shall know peace. Your fields shall be fruitful, your vineyards will yield the choicest wine, and the nations will tremble before you. 6But if you do not do this day what I have commanded you, you will not know peace. Your fields will spoil. Your vineyards will yield the bird of thunder. And the nations roundabout you will look at you and call you rekt among the earth.”

Re: Biblical Mafia [PREFACE]

Ruth wrote:I have never been a fan of Pauls; he is such a misogynist.
No more so than almost any male during that time, I would say. In fact, given the cultural changes (and fashion revolutions) during the first century, I would argue that Paul was more aware of the importance and value of women than most of his contemporaries. A lot of what we see presented in his letters dealt with propriety among a given culture, even if Paul (a former Pharisee) used Pharisaic rhetoric and arguments to prove his point (and Israelite Christians in foreign lands would have accepted those arguments).

The head covering passage in First Corinthians 11 makes a lot of sense in this context.

Figuring out who the other players are is always relevant, isn't it? :mafia:

I may make a lot of puns, but I'm trying to stick to one per post. Put the tent peg away.
Deborah is not the one with the tent peg. She is the little old woman depicted in the piece. The tent peg-wielder is none other than Jael, who drove it into the Canaanite warlord Sisera's head while he was asleep. Barak, who defeated the opposing army but lost out on the honor for slaying the captain, is the man in the background.

Epignosis wrote:Disciples search as long as they are alive.
This is technically untrue, and I just realized why: Disciples who have not been found search as long as they are alive. Disciples who have been found stop searching and start using whatever gifts God has given them.

Forgive me for any confusion I may have caused!

Also, if the final six vote before the tenth hour (PM EST), the first stoning will begin. :noble:

Perhaps. Perhaps not. :smoky:

That sounds appropriate.

Ordinarily, I like to stay out of the thread unless someone addresses me or I need to address something. However, this is the first time I've ever offered a theme that was academic rather than pop-cultural. For that reason, I hope no one minds my (occasional) commentary and observations on culture or history. Feel free to disregard or read at your pleasure. :)

Re: Biblical Mafia [PREFACE]

Rachel wrote:Mr. Epig Sir-- when talking about the Apocalypse, do you mean the genre as a whole? For example, the book of Daniel is an excellent example of apocalyptic literature, but it not in the actual Apocalypse as depicted in the New Testament.
Daniel contains eschatological content, including an apocalypse, although his book is generally categorized in the "major prophets."

An "apocalypse" is synonymous with the word "revelation." The word refers to uncovering something, or making something that was hidden known. The word itself has nothing to do with the end of the world, although it has long since gained that connotation. It's interesting to me how words adopt meanings they did not have at one time.

Ruth wrote:Epignosis, will we discover the results of this poll?

- Does Jezebel's ability take away a disciples search as well as his power?

- It doesn't say whether the four horseman have BTSC, so are these roles independent?
There's no need to shout. I, the Host, have heard thy prayer.

-The disciples search for one another in the manner in which you have described. They will not be told if they are successful. Disciples search as long as they are alive.

-Yes.

-Yes.

-The disciples are not prophets, so no.

The Books of First and Second Mafioso: Preface
After the recent discovery of a pair of supposedly ancient manuscripts in a tomb in southern Lebanon, scholars ranging from historians to philologists are keen on determining the nature and authenticity of the documents, wondering if they can shed light on the mysteries of the Bible. Gregory Pope, noted anthropologist and social-science author, has written that the manuscripts (titled First and Second Mafioso) may give insight into the culture of ancient Near Eastern peoples.

Other scholars remain unconvinced.

Rabbi Moshe ben Yochai, Talmudic expert, notes a “dubious quality” regarding the authorship of the manuscripts, pointing out that the style is too dissimilar to ancient Mediterranean manuscripts of the same period, and that instances of words foreign to the languages of the time make repeated appearances. Terms such as “feb” and “linki” do not appear in any known text from that region. Linguists are puzzled as to their meaning, and have thus far only been able to offer conjecture.

The content, though, as far as it has been accurately translated, involves acts of brutality, betrayal, and deception that rivals that found in canonical literature. Stonings are frequent and disturbing, sometimes taking place over the slightest infractions. Public vengeance is not the only manner of violence that appears, and if the authenticity of the manuscripts can be confirmed, they will serve as grim evidence that the people depicted in biblical literature were even more brutal and less forgiving than canon suggests.

Re: Biblical Mafia [PREFACE]

The Ten Commandments

I. Thou shalt not speak privately with thy neighbor without my permission; I am the Host.
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” (Matthew 12:36)

II. Thou shalt not edit nor delete your posts.
“And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” (2 Peter 2:3)

III. Thou shalt not publically identify your role nor the role of thy neighbor, nor shalt thou identify the person using your account, even in BTSC.
“Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.” (Proverbs 11:13)

IV. Thou shalt not post private messages the Host sends to thee.
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)

V. Thou shalt not double target.
“Do not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people.” (Leviticus 19:18)

VI. Thou shalt not use thy Host’s color.
“For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.” (Isaiah 14:13)

VII. Thou shalt speaketh in red if life hath gone out of thee.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” (Ecclesiasties 9:10)

VIII. Thou shalt use off-topic green and non-player blue as appropriate.
“And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.” (1 Timothy 5:13)

IX. Thou shalt ask your Host for any assistance you may require.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)

X. Thou shalt not be an asshat.
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.” (Ephesians 4:31)
